Tanja's Biography
It is with deep sadness that we announce the untimely death of our artist and friend, Tanja Rice. After battling with cancer with great fortitude for some months, she was finally overwhelmed Thursday night, 21st July 2011, comforted by her father Ken and partner Steve. While we will all miss her, Tanja leaves behind her the legacy of a beautiful 2 year old daughter, her music and many memories of better days. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family, partner and friends.
We will continue to host Tanja's music on our site, and we intend to issue a remastered version of her EP in 2012, with a percentage of the proceeds going to selected cancer charities...
Trawl through the ever-increasing numbers of the phenomenon that is the female singer-songwriter and you'll be hard-pressed to find someone who stands out in the crowd - different, unusually good, immediately attractive to the eye and ear, contemporary enough to be today but rootsy enough to have musical integrity. Here's a name for you; Tanja Rice. Born and raised in the USA, schooling in Oklahoma, Texas and New York she later moved to and finished her education in Europe... so far, so good, but... wait! A chanteuse in the true sense of the word, Tanja has had a rich and varied background and her performances, style and song writing are a testament to that.
Brought up on a musical diet of Country and Blues, Tanja has transformed herself into someone who can not only readily interpret in her own unique style a song from the likes of Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss but who can also compose songs which are memorable musical pieces, haunting in some cases, and still have an obviously enduring quality.
Blessed with a rich and unusual voice, her delivery and talent stand out from the ever growing crowd of female wannabes. Her latest recording, in collaboration with a Steve Payne production / arrangement on this label, showcases her obvious talent.
